These new technology cataract IOLs will eventually be available to virtually any cataract surgery candidate. However, during the introduction of these new lenses, the three lens manufacturers have limited the range of correction available. In addition, patients with significant astigmatism may not fall within the current candidate parameters. The MEC surgeons working with these lenses may be able to identify during the exam those patients who are not candidates for the lenses, although pre-operative measurements will provide a definitive answer. Because cataract surgery is rarely an emergency, the surgeon and patient may agree to postpone surgery until the patient has more lens options from which to choose.
